Wildlife Sanctuaries in TezpurTezpur is home to three of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries of Assam and the north-east. The Nameri National Park located about 35kms from in Tezpur is a popular tourist spot in Tezpur. The Sonai Rupai Sanctuary and Burachapori sanctuary is home to various species of birds and animals.
Sonai Rupai Sanctuary
The Sonai Rupai Sanctuary is located along the foothills of the Himalayas in Tezpur in Assam. The total area of the sanctuary is about 175 sq km. The sanctuary is famous for Indian Bison and elephant. The climate of the sanctuary is moist and rainy. The sanctuary experiences very heavy rainfall during monsoon.
The Sonai Rupai sanctuary which is an evergreen forest type is very rich in natural vegetation. Rare species of medical plants and trees are available in the sanctuary.The Sanctuary is also the home to many species of, birds, mammals and reptiles. The wild animals that are found in the sanctuary includes Indian Gibson, one horned rhinoceros, elephant, pygmy hog, hog deer, barking deer, tiger and leopard. Reptiles such as Russell’s viper and python are also found in the sanctuary. Migratory bird species like horn bill, white winged wood duck, Indian roller, black headed oriole, pelican and hill myna are found in the sanctuary.
Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary
The Burachapori Wildlife sanctuary is situated on the southern bank of river Brahmaputra in the Sonitpur district of Assam and is about 40kms from Tezpur. The total area of the sanctuary is 44.06 sq kms. The Sanctuary is actually a part of the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary. About 60% of the sanctuary is grassland.
The sanctuary is popular for the One-horned Rhinoceros and Bengal Florican. The mighty river Brahmaputra flowing behind the sanctuary gives a scenic backdrop to the sanctuary. Animals that are found in the sanctuary include Leopard, one-horned Rhinoceros Tiger, Wild Buffalo, Wild Boar and Asiatic Buffalo, hog Deer, Wild Pigs and elephants. Various species of migratory birds like Bengal Florican, wintering ferruginous ducks, Swamp partridge (fancolin), Water Hen, Parakeets, Wood Cock and reptiles are found in the sanctuary. Variety of fishes can also be found in the in the water bodies.
Nameri National Park
Located on the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, Nameri national park is located about 35 kms from Tezpur. Different species of the mammals and birds can be found in the park. Another very distinctive feature of the park is river rafting. The tourists can enjoy rafting in the Jia Bhorali river that flows through the park.
Different species of animals found in the park are Leopard, Sambar, Muntjac, tiger,dhole (the Asiatic wild dog), Pygmy Hog, Sloth Bear, Gaur, Wild Boar, Capped Langur, Bear, Indian Giant Squirrel, and Himalayan Black.
Some of birds that can be seen in the park are the white winged wood duck, Great Pied Hornbill, Ibis Bill, Rufous Necked Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Black Stork, Plovers, Babblers and Blue-bearded Bee-eaters. To read more about Nameri National Park click here.
