Business and Economy of Tezpur

Agriculture in Tezpur

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of Tezpur. Around 80% of the population of the district depends on agriculture. In most parts of the district, rain fed cultivation of single paddy crop is still prevalent. With the help of modern irrigation facilities multiple cropping is made possible. Both Kharif and Rabi cropping is done in this region. Some of the major crops cultivated in the region are jute, sugarcane, Tea, Pulses, rice, mustard and paddy. Apart from these other subsidiary crops grown in the region are potato, vegetables, tobacco and fruits like banana, coconuts, pineapples, mangoes and oranges.

Tea Gardens in Tezpur

The next most contributor to the economy of Tezpur is the existence of large number of tea gardens. The Sonitpur district has all together seventy three tea gardens. Monabari in the Sonitpur district is Asia's largest tea garden. Previously, the tea gardens were owned by European Tea companies but in recent times Indian Tea companies like Brooke Bond, Tata tea are taking over the ownership of the tea gardens.

Tourism Industry in Tezpur

Tourism industry is another sector that contributes to the economy of Tezpur and the state as a whole. Tezpur described as the city of eternal love is famous for its ancient Hindu temples, archeological ruins and beautiful parks. Fishery

Fishery in Tezpur is a popular commercial activity but the fishery sector in the district is not developed to the desired level. Around 90% of the fish products are imported to different region. The Brahmaputra River and about 1000 of ponds in the district provide huge opportunity for fish production.

Weaving

Another important cottage industry is the handloom weaving that has been flourishing in Tezpur as well in Assam since time immemorial. Every Assamese household still practice handloom weaving. Most of its items are of utility value. Some of the handloom products includes, eri chadar, riha and muga mekhla.

Sericulture

Sericulture is another very important cottage industry not only in Sonitpur but also in the state of Assam. During the agricultural off season, the people of the district extensively practice Sericulture as a subsidiary occupation. The district is well known for excellent quality of silk and the region also has a tremendous scope to develop sericulture. The Silk found in the region are Eri, pat and Muga. Sericulture occupies a major place in the rural economy of Sonitpur.
